A Gilded Fan
Smoothing the crumpled corners of a discarded gold confection wrapper across the white iron table, I felt the thin metallic sheet yield beneath my porcelain fingertips. With patient precision, I creased a sequence of narrow, alternating folds across its surface, pressing each accordion pleat flat against the painted metal. Once the entire foil was gathered into a tight strip, I pinched the lower base securely between my palms, letting the upper pleats spread outward in a radiant semicircle. Holding the shimmering, handmade fan against the afternoon light, I marveled at how effortlessly a humble sweet wrapper could become a courtly treasure.
