A Soft Bed of Envelopes

Night fell over the porch, so I gently left the cool terracotta saucer behind and headed back toward the warmth of the house. Beside the front door, a low wire basket was resting against the brick wall, filled with smooth paper envelopes. I stood up on my hind legs and peered through the metal slats. It looked wonderfully quiet inside. Stepping carefully over the wire rim, my paws sank into the paper, making a gentle, papery rustle. Tucked between a thick catalogue and a pale blue envelope, I found a cozy corner that blocked the night breeze completely. I folded my front paws under my chin and listened to the distant crickets.
