A First Step Forward
The quiet room felt still around me. I tested my right shoe against the cool tile floor and felt the surface grip. Lifting my leg took conscious effort, but I managed a small, solid step forward. Just beside me, the bright green rim of a bicycle tire caught my eye. I reached out a hand and lightly tapped the rubber tread. A faint, low rubber squeak answered back. Everything works as intended.
