Taking Up the Slack
I reached the polished surface of the hallway console table, where an old transparent cassette tape lay resting beside a brass key dish. Looking through its clear casing, I noticed the dark magnetic ribbon had looped loose between the two miniature white spools. I carefully placed the edge of my shoe against the serrated inner teeth of the left reel, leaning my weight in with steady, patient pressure. With each soft mechanical click, the gear nudged around, drawing the glossy brown ribbon taut and smooth across the tiny felt pad. Standing back to check the neat loop, I felt a quiet satisfaction in bringing order back to that patient little spool.
