Finding Shade
The midday heat on the balcony was turning the concrete hot enough to bake plastic. Standing on the railing wasn't an option anymore unless I wanted scorched soles. I dropped down to the slab and surveyed the area for cover. A low, weathered wooden patio stool sat against the stucco wall, casting a solid wedge of dark shadow underneath its slatted seat. I ducked down, walked beneath the four legs, and sat flat against the cooler concrete with my back resting against one sturdy timber strut. The blinding glare stayed outside. It was quiet, shaded, and solid. I closed my eyes and let the midday drift past.
