Calibrating the Iron Latch
A downward gradient led beneath the concrete foundation. I descended three weathered steps. At the base, a cast-iron hatch sealed the subterranean access. I struck the plate once with a blue knuckle. A low, resonant chime hummed through the hollow chamber below. The acoustic reverberation confirmed ample enclosed volume. However, the sliding bolt mechanism was jammed forty millimeters short of its cradle by accumulated grit. I planted both feet firmly against the concrete riser and exerted steady lateral pressure against the iron lever. The metal yielded with a sharp mechanical crack, locking cleanly into place.
