A Clear Descent
The gap under the screen door offered a path out. I stepped onto the weathered timber of the patio stairs. The yard stretched beyond. Across the middle tread, a thick garden hose lay coiled, stiff from the midday heat, blocking the center passage. I paused. Evaluated the drop. The left edge showed two inches of clear cedar grain. I shifted my weight back, testing the boot grip against the dry wood. Solid traction. I took the step, gripping the outer edge of the plank with one hand until both feet were set. Route to the yard is open.
