A Soft Tumble

I pushed back indoors through the flap as the night turned crisp outside, carrying the smooth pigeon feather I found on the garden bench. My feet felt heavy after a day on the lawn, craving a quiet resting spot. Padding across the living room carpet toward the low sofa, my toe caught the edge of a thick woolen sock left half-folded on the floor. I stumbled forward, landing softly on my knees against the plush rug. The feather floated out of my grasp, drifting gently into the fleece cuff of the sock like an envelope. Tilting my head, I brushed off my knees and decided to rest right there beside it.
