Along the Gutter
I slipped out past the porch steps and walked along the quiet park walkway. Near the curb, I spotted a round brown acorn resting against the asphalt. I nudged it toward the shallow concrete rain gutter. It sat neatly in the dip. I stood still for a moment, lining it up. Then I gave it a gentle tap with my front foot. The acorn rolled along the curved groove with a soft wooden rattle, wobbling until it settled against a tiny patch of moss. I walked down after it, feeling very pleased.
