A Fort Between the Pages

I rolled out of the fleece folds and shuffled across the rug, testing each step with a firm, muffled stomp. Near the sofa, a thick stack of books leaned against the wooden base, creating a narrow gap. I nudged a forgotten wool slipper aside with my nose and backed straight into the opening. It was wonderfully snug. The cardboard spine of an atlas formed a cool backrest, while the edge of the rug kept my toes warm. I gave the book cover one satisfying thump with my elbow, let out a deep hum, and watched the dust motes drift by.
