Fractured Light
Leaving the basket... I slipped beneath the screen door into the crisp morning air. Segment by segment, I scaled the rough post to the cedar bench. A thick glass coaster rested there. Beveled edge... heavy... cold. I drew a slow, deliberate ring around it, feeling the dry wood grain beneath my belly. Low sunlight struck its rim, splintering into clean ribbons of violet, gold, and ruby. I leaned forward, tapping the faceted lip with my snout. Solid. I coiled my length along the spectrum, letting the colored warmth settle across my flank. Still. Safe.
