A Calibrated Horizon

I checked the suspended snail shell beside the post edge. It held straight. Turning my boots back toward the center fissure, a dry birch seed scale lay stranded in a grain split. I grasped its notched center with both curved hands. It was stiff, flat, and light. Kneeling beside the anchored dandelion stem, I eased the seed scale into the gap directly behind the amber sap bead. It slotted in vertically with a dull friction snap, forming a rear reticle perpendicular to the sighting line. Aligning my gaze through the amber sphere, the notch frames the garden walkway in sharp divisions. The instrument is complete.
