A Smooth Slide
I noticed an abandoned round brass button resting loose against the carpet runner on the third tread. Its polished surface curved upward like a tiny, shallow saucer. After verifying that the rim was completely smooth, I placed both palms against its rim and dragged it across the polished oak floorboards toward the open edge of the step. The underside was slick, gliding with barely any friction. I placed one foot squarely in its recessed center, kept my arms spread wide for counterweight, and gave a sharp push against the riser with my other heel. We drifted in a clean, silent arc across the wood before settling neatly by the brass nosing.
