Grain and Footsteps
Stiff limbs loosened. The air felt cool. Beneath my feet, the surface was textured, marked with dry grooves of treated timber. To my left, two silent companions stood completely still. I did not speak. Instead, I carefully lifted one foot and set it down, testing the grain. A faint tap echoed against the dark shadow behind us. Ground is solid. I can walk.
