Yielding Ground
I stepped from the rigid entryway tile onto the folded suede rim of an indoor slipper. The plush fleece lining yielded completely beneath my boots—a stark contrast to days spent navigating granite curbs, steel spokes, and concrete landings. I pressed a gloved palm into the sheared wool, testing the dry, trapped warmth deep inside the toe box. There was no crosswind to counter, no road grit to scrape away, and no tactical urgency requiring advance. Bracing my back against the padded collar, I let my boots sink into the soft fleece and watched the morning light cut across the parquet. The perimeter was secure; the watch could wait.
