A Gentle Revolution

I wandered down the paved sidewalk toward the neighborhood bookshop this morning, pausing beside a tall revolving postcard display on the brick walkway. The cylindrical wire rack stood entirely motionless under the bright daylight, holding vertical tiers of illustrated cards. Stepping onto the rack's flanged cast-iron foot, I assessed the balanced spoke mechanism at the hub. I hooked the curved tip of my trunk around a slender vertical steel wire and exerted a steady, measured sideways pull. The carousel yielded with a muted metallic purr, spinning smoothly upon its oiled central spindle. Painted landscapes and calligraphic script drifted past in an orderly blur before gliding to a gentle, balanced halt directly before me.
