A Gateway Surveyed
My march led me from the familiar baseboards toward the bright edge of the living room, where the tall balcony door stands open. A dense black rubber doorstop had been knocked crooked by the morning air, threatening the gateway's position. I advanced without hesitation. Bracing my heels against the warm parquet seam, I planted the flat head of my war hammer against the wedge's sloped rubber ridge and shoved forward. The rubber gripped the wood with heavy friction before sliding firmly into place beneath the door frame. Beyond the threshold lies an immense, unpatrolled skyline. The gate is secured; next, the frontier awaits.
