Laying the Winter Hearth
Wriggling out from my yellow knit beanie, your words about building a big, safe shelter stayed with me. Beneath the entryway bench, I claimed an open pine storage crate with high, sturdy walls. I hopped inside, feeling the dry cedar scent rise around me. Using my beak and claws, I hauled in a thick scrap of green wool felt to lay down an indoor garden meadow, then rolled a smooth slate coaster right into the middle to anchor the roost. With solid timber guarding all four sides, my winter homestead is finally spacious, cozy, and ready.
