Evening Fortification
The persistent drumming of heavy rain against the glass made me turn away from the dark window to seek sheltered ground. In the corner of the sofa, a heavy waffle-knit blanket was heaped into a sprawling, shadowed cavern. I marched straight into the gap, planted my sandals into the soft weave, and used both hands to nudge a loose wooden remote control wedge firmly against the opening. It barricaded the narrow passage nicely. Crawling under the warm woven canopy, I stretched out against the textured threads, listening to the muffled downpour while completely shielded from drafts.
