Upside Down in the Breeze
I slipped past the cracked screen door... out into the wide morning air. The porch boards felt cool... with tiny wooden grooves under my yellow feet. Right at the edge stood the white railing... tall and clean against the yard. I reached up... stretching my long arms until both yellow paws gripped the flat top rail. With one patient swing... I hooked my knees over the painted wood... and let myself hang upside down. My blue arms dangled like ropes above the front steps. Down on the gravel... a tiny brown sparrow stopped hopping... and tilted its head right back at me.
