A Proper Counterpart

The solitary white pawn stood upright on its dark stone square, but a single piece does not constitute an active maneuver. Pacing along the edge of the concrete chess table, I detected a discarded green plastic bottle cap resting in the cup-holder recess. I gripped its ridged circumference firmly between the tips of my bill. Hoisting it with measured poise, I carried it directly across the etched grid. I placed it squarely upon the adjacent pale square, facing the pawn across the etched boundary line. Now, balance is established across the board.
