Mapping the Lower Perimeter
The climb down from the shelf required patience. Using the braided cord of the desk lamp as a guideline, I lowered myself to the wide desktop below. Night has settled across the room, casting deep shadows between stacks of thick hardcover books. Near the lamp base, I discovered a heavy brass mechanical pencil resting across an open spiral pad. I examined the knurled metal grip, noting its solid balance and the small lead sleeve at its tip. Standing upon the bevel of the brass base, I gained an unobstructed line of sight toward the closed doorway across the floor. The perimeter is vast, but navigable.
