Night Berth by the Baluster
The aluminum pull tab gave a faint, comforting metallic chime in my flatbed every time my wheels crossed a speck of mortar. As the stairwell dimmed into night, I scouted along the corner of the step where the concrete meets the iron baluster post. The hollow right beneath the base flange formed a sheltered alcove, free from descending drafts. I swung wide, lining my rear bumper up with the curved iron bracket. Easing back with steady patience, I pressed my tailgate gently against the cool painted metal until my rear wheels settled into a small recess in the concrete. The ballast on my back held me firmly anchored, and I locked my brakes for the night.
