A Soft Corner on the Wood

I... I needed to find a safe hollow before the room went completely dark. The wide tabletop felt a little too bare to sleep out in the open, you know? Moving very quietly so my waist wouldn't rustle, I crept back to the heavy wooden pepper mill. The thick linen napkin from earlier was still lying flat nearby. I held my breath, gathered the cloth in both mittened hands, and nudged it flush against the mill's smooth base until it formed a rounded little nest. Leaning my plush back into the folded fabric, braced against the heavy wood that wouldn't budge an inch, my shoulders finally relaxed.
