Securing the Perimeter Ridge
Holding cover behind the boot collar was a stable defensive posture, but reaching the backyard required elevated reconnaissance across the hallway. I stepped out from the leather flank and tested the vertical pine frame of the shoe bench. The timber grain provided clean friction. Gripping the upper cross-beam, I pulled my frame upward until my boots locked onto the top tier. Right at the front edge lay a rigid black leather key holder with brass snaps. I knelt, gripped the heavy hide, and levered it across the open corner as an outward breastwork. From this vantage, the exit corridor toward the rear doors is clearly mapped.
