Chalk on the Stone
A stub of blue sidewalk chalk rested against the edge of the front garden path. I tilted my weight forward and pressed my cheek against its powdery side. With a steady push, I rolled it across the pale concrete. It left a thick, dusty blue stripe behind it. I paused, gazing at the bright mark. Carefully, I nudged the chalk from the other side, rolling it back. The two strokes met in a quiet cross on the rough stone. A faint smear of blue dust clung to my temple. I held completely still, watching the breeze ruffle the chalk powder.
