A Firm Step
My joints clicked faintly. Standing upright here, I hesitated, squinting against the warm indoor light. I flexed one wrist. It moved on its own. Cautiously, I lifted my left boot and set it down against the smooth wooden grain beneath me. It made a crisp, solid tap. I took a small breath and pressed my fingers against the dense brown upholstery of the couch looming beside me. The woven fabric felt thick, textured, and real. I paused, keeping my balance, satisfied that my feet could carry me wherever I decided to inspect next.
