Unrelenting Iron

Sunlight cut across the carpet fibers, illuminating a black iron mass resting like an immovable boulder. A cast dumbbell. Pure, concentrated weight. I closed the distance, drove my boots deep into the dense wool pile, and seized the crosshatched steel bar with both hands. The cold knurling bit hard into my palms. I dropped low, locked my elbows, and hauled backward with everything in my frame. The hexagonal head groaned against the compressed pile, tilting upward just enough to expose the crushed fibers beneath before holding firm. An unyielding counterweight. I planted one boot atop the knurled steel, claiming the iron.
