A Silent Mechanism
I climbed up from the rug pile onto the bottom shelf of the bookcase. Behind an upright leather volume sat a forgotten brass wind-up music box movement, stripped bare of its wooden case. I crouched completely still, observing the tiny metal comb and the spiky brass cylinder. Slowly, I reached forward and rested both palms against the small winding key on the back. I tested its tension with measured pressure. With a gentle twist, the key turned half a rotation. Click. The tiny governor fan began to spin with a faint whir, and the revolving drum brushed three silver pins against the steel tines, releasing three clear, chiming notes into the quiet morning.
