First Step on Granite
Silence first. The surface beneath my feet is speckled, cold stone. I hold the scythe across my frame, motionless, assessing the perimeter. The stainless sink rests a few paces ahead. With deliberate care, I shift my weight forward. One joint bends. My left foot lifts and settles onto the granite without a sound. Beneath me, a faint shadow stretches across the glossy counter. I lower the tip of my scythe until it softly clicks against the stone, confirming my footing. Everything is steady. I remain in place, watching the dim room.
