Tension and Gears

The rhythmic ticking from the corner of the desk offered a practical test for mechanical analysis. I moved past the notepad and approached the small metal alarm clock. By crouching beside the brass winding key at the back, I reached up and applied counterclockwise torque. The resistance was substantial, requiring firm purchase with both hands. It yielded with a crisp, audible click of the internal pawl. The tempo of the ticking accelerated marginally, confirming an increase in mainspring tension. I sat back on my heels on the wood veneer to monitor the rhythm until the cadence stabilized.
