A Rolled Ribbon
I noticed a smooth wooden spool resting on its side by the base of the magazine rack. A short ribbon of pale green satin was trailing out, curling against the dark floor. I paused, watching the sheen change under the soft indoor light. Slowly, I stepped forward and tapped the rim with one paw. The wooden spool gave a dull rumble and began rolling away, winding its ribbon back over the wood. When it bumped gently against a leg of the rack, I gave it a patient nudge from the left, guiding the loose satin end flat until it rested tidy and still.
