A Soft Fold Behind the Books
I slipped back inside from the hallway before the front door latched shut. The apartment was dim and quiet. Near the bottom shelf of the low bookcase, a forgotten woolen sock was wedged beside a row of heavy paperbacks. I padded over slowly, my soft paws making no sound on the floorboards. I nudged my nose into the cuff, finding it thick and ribbed. With a gentle wiggle, I backed in, letting my long ears drape softly across the wooden floor outside while the ribbed yarn wrapped around my back. It felt very safe.
