A Steady Little Weight
I reached out to touch the small brass weight resting on the oak console. It was cool and heavy, shaped like a tiny solid bell. I paused, watching the morning light catch the stamped numbers on its rounded top. It had tipped sideways against the polished timber, wobbling just a bit. With both paws, I carefully guided it back toward its round hollow in the scale base. It settled with a soft, clean clink into the green felt lining. The brass balance beam overhead gave one gentle nod, then stayed perfectly still. Everything feels calm and steady now.
