Testing the Ground
The stillness ended. I looked down at the soft fibers under my shoes. With a slow bend of my right knee, I lifted one foot and pressed it back down into the textured carpet. The fibers gave way beneath my sole, then sprang back slightly. I crouched, touching the weave with my fingers to test the tension. Stable footing. I stood back up and paused, ready for the next move.
