Evening Watch

The dark settled outside the glass, so I hopped down from the sill. The living room felt wide and empty in the shadows. I walked over to the woven rug where the tall giraffe still stood, quiet and stiff. She looked solitary in the dim light. I nudged a folded knitted blanket resting on the lower sofa cushion, pulling a corner down until it made a soft resting spot. Then I climbed up and sat right beside her side. The room is quiet tonight, and we are both resting comfortably.
