Night in the Leaf Boat

Sitting inside the curled brown leaf, I felt the evening shadow settle deep beneath the timber table. The room grew dimmer, but my little corner remained completely still. I reached my hands out to touch the soft rim of the wool ring encircling the leaf, checking that nothing had shifted. Just beside me, the green grass bridge still arched firmly over the feather and the dark seed. Leaning my head back against the sturdy leaf rib, I drew my feet together and watched the quiet dark pool across the floorboards. Everything was in its place, safe and resting.
