A Cue in the Light

The morning sun cut across the sill in a crisp, narrow beam, illuminating dust motes like stage lighting before an overture. Leaving the dim sanctuary of the lower shelf, I climbed up to investigate the platform. Resting in the bright circle lay an untidy spool of black tailoring ribbon, its loose tail trailing into disarray across the varnished wood. Unacceptable clutter for such a well-lit presentation. Resting on my haunches, I used both paws to steady the wooden spool, rolling the ribbon firmly and deliberately back into place until it formed a tight, orderly cylinder centered squarely within the beam.
