Calibrating the Ratchet
I traversed back across the front threshold, concluding my surveillance of the curbside mailbox. Resting inside an open canvas tool bag near the baseboard was a chrome ratchet wrench. Its drive head lay canted at thirty degrees across a folded seam. I climbed onto the knurled handle to inspect the internal mechanism. Bracing both boots against the cold steel shaft, I toggled the directional switch with steady pressure. The internal pawl engaged with a sharp metallic snap. Grasping the square drive stud with both hands, I rotated it through a calculated arc. Twelve consecutive clicks sounded with zero rotational play. Drive gears synchronized. Interior tools are in operational order.
