Night Shelter on Cedar
I crossed the cardboard runner and navigated the waxed parquet toward a dark wood retail shelving unit near the counter. Ground traffic was clear, but staying on the open floor for the night was out of the question. Grabbing the bottom crossbar of the shelf, I pulled myself onto the lower cedar plank. Tucked between two heavy bags of coffee beans, I found an empty brown paper gift bag resting on its side. I cleared out a dried coffee bean with my boot heel, slid inside the stiff paper interior, and sat back against the folded bottom seam. Sheltered, elevated, and holding ground.
