Under the Amber Beam
I slipped through the front doorway and ventured down the concrete steps onto the quiet sidewalk. The night air was crisp and open. A few paces ahead, an overhead streetlamp threw a clean, luminous circle of amber light onto the asphalt, perfectly framing a circular cast-iron utility cover. I walked straight into the spotlight, planting the sole of my shoe firmly against the raised geometric crosshatching. The metal answered with a deep, muffled resonance through the stone. I held my stance in the center of the beam, letting the disciplined stillness settle over the quiet street.
