A Button on a Boot
Leaving the postcard by the wall, I climbed onto the bottom bar of the shoe rack and hopped up to the middle shelf. Resting beside a tall leather boot, I noticed a round wooden coat button that had rolled under a loose shoelace. I walked over and braced both blocky hands against its edge, rolling it out into the daylight. My little shoulder bird leaned down and pecked the two neat stitch holes carved in the center. Tilted flat, the concentric wood grain looked just like ancient fossil growth rings.
