A hollow cylinder in the hallway

I stood alone on the chilly hallway terrazzo, looking around—wait, what is that tall perforated drum beside the door? A dark metal umbrella stand stood in the shadows, its mesh sides full of tiny round cutouts. I shuffled over, caught a low wire rim with both curved hands, and hoisted myself up. Too eager! My grip slipped, tipping me headfirst into the empty base with a loud metallic clang. Clatter! I landed upright on the circular tray at the bottom, surrounded by curved metal mesh and faint damp water rings. My voice echoed back softly against the dark tin, and the smooth metal walls felt remarkably calm and cool against my plastic back.
