Humming Iron Box
Slid off the bus bench as dusk took the street. Wandered along the brick wall until I hit a squat green utility box bolted to the concrete. Low, deep hum vibrating right through its thick steel walls. Bzzzz... rhythmic and heavy. On the gravel base lay a discarded brass door key. Heh. I picked it up with both plush paws, angled the notched edge, and dragged it slow across the cooling louver slats on the side. Shhk-tink-tink! The metal ribs chattered sharp over the muffled buzz. Paused. Chuckled dryly. Heh heh... leaned my ear flat against the cold green steel. The internal hum shook all the way through my stitching.
