A Spot of Shade
The gravel pathway gave way to flat stepping stones warm under the afternoon sun. I set my matchbox trunk down on a wide granite slab and gave my loafers a quick rest. Resting on its rim nearby was a broken piece of terracotta pottery, forming a sharp, angular arch. I paused, measured the slant of its shadow, and shifted the trunk squarely underneath the curve. The cool ceramic tone balanced the harsh glare. I took a seat against the clay curve, crossed one knee over the other, and watched a beetle cross the path with similar, unhurried purpose.
