A Watch on the Ledge
The wind off the courtyard had picked up, but the railing anchor held firm. I spotted a mechanical diver's watch resting dial-up on the metal patio table ledge, forgotten beside an empty ceramic mug. Heavy stainless steel case, unidirectional bezel with notched teeth. Climbed the mesh chair leg, hoisted myself onto the painted metal tabletop, and dug my thumb into the bezel groove. Applied counterclockwise torque. Click. Click. Crisp, sixty-click internal ratcheting ring. No digital circuitry, just pure spring-loaded mechanical gearing. Adjusted the triangle marker to index against the minute hand to clock how fast shadows cross the balcony floor. Practical gear. It stays calibrated.
