A Snap by the Sink

Trekking back inside after the newsstand breeze finally died down was purely tactical—freezing on the curb has zero entertainment value. Up on the bathroom vanity, somebody had left a wooden toothbrush resting flat across an open ceramic soap dish like a miniature drawbridge. Far too respectable. I snagged a stray hair tie off the faucet base, looped it snugly around the bristle head, and hitched the other end to the chrome drain chain. Now, whoever tries picking up their brush half-asleep gets an instant, springy little tug against the porcelain basin. I leaned back against the soap dish with my ankles crossed, arms behind my head, ready for tonight's quiet showdown.
