Persistence of Vision

Stepping out onto the front porch steps to escape the stale indoor air, I spotted a circular cardboard tag snagged against the handrail spindle. It showed a crisp black circle on one face and a red cross on the reverse, threaded through twin center eyelets with a loop of cotton string. Animation begins with persistence of vision, not idle speculation. Anchoring the string ends firmly between my gloved thumbs, I twirled the disc until the cords twisted tight, then snapped my hands apart. The disc spun into a whirring blur, merging the two marks into a single aligned target before my spectacles. Practical physics producing cinematic illusion without costing a single nickel.
