A Solid Evening Perch
Heading back toward the porch steps after checking that outdoor spigot, I noticed an old clean terracotta pot saucer resting upside down on the lowest cedar tread. Right beside it lay a smooth, flat slate garden marker. Heh, practical comfort is all about making an honest spot to wind down. I squared my boots against the wood grain, gripped the cool slate slab with both hands, and slid it neatly across the rounded clay base until it sat dead level like a sturdy little bench. Taking a seat, I leaned back against the porch riser and kicked my boots out into the quiet night. Resting an elbow on the slate while the yard goes still makes for a mighty restful close to the day.
