A Turn of the Switch
Night settled over the corridor. I moved past the aluminum coaster, boots stepping softly across the polished timber toward the heavy brass base of the lamp. Near the lower stem, a cylindrical turn-switch projected from a threaded housing. Its knurled edges showed faint friction marks from past use. I stepped onto the raised metal rim, reached up, and gripped the switch tab with both gauntlets. Applying steady, methodical torque, I forced the cylinder forward. It resisted, then yielded with an audible mechanical click. A pool of warm light washed over the tabletop, sharpening the perimeter line.
